The Building Committee duties include overseeing
the custodian, the repair, cleaning, and maintenance of all church
buildings, stocks supplies, keeps the inventory of church property, and handles all safety
issues. The building committee
does not meet formally during the year, instead the members of the
committee gather together, discuss and assist each other on various
projects as they arise throughout the year. Members include Bill S
(Chair), Leland B, Dave S, Debby B, and Bruce M.
The
following major activities were accomplished in 2007:
-
The
roof leaks were repaired in the sanctuary, fellowship hall, and west
side entryway. There were two major leaks in the sanctuary involving
the roof drains. Sheets of rubber were used to cover the cracks on
the roof and prevent future cracks from freezing and thawing. Leaks
at the other areas were found primarily where the sheets of
composition roofing overlap.
-
A
water filter was installed on the main line coming into the building
to remove the sediment being pumped from the well. The filter is
located in the utility closet between the bathrooms. Many thanks to
Debby for researching and coordinating this effort.
-
Smoke
detectors have been installed in four (4) locations. One outside the
utility room between the two bathrooms, two in the nursery and one
in the kitchen by the storage room door.
-
Door
closers have been installed on the two exterior doors in the nursery
to stop the wind from ripping them open.
-
Debby
B maintained the water system by gathering water samples for testing
and water purity.
Thanks
to everyone who has performed tasks around the church. |

The Church Expansion
Under the supervision of the Building Committee, in
2004, the Church Expansion Program Committee (CEPC)
was formed to build a new wing onto the Fellowship Hall. Planning
and research began in 2001. The wing includes new offices, bathrooms,
classrooms, a nursery, and an enlarged and remodeled kitchen. The
project was completed and furnished on May 14th.
The
next day, Sunday May 15, 2005, it was dedicated during a very special
service, followed by an official ribbon cutting ceremony and a wonderful
celebration luncheon.
The
exterior cross was constructed by David S of beams recycled from the
demolished fellowship hall wall. The metal work was done by Leland B;
powder-coating by Kaere Corporation. Design was by Bunny B, with input
from the congregation. The shape is based on the Latin cross, to which
was added the Celtic ring of the Presbyterian Church. The red ring and
flame symbolize the Holy Spirit, while the green plant symbolizes the
creation and our church’s commitment to the Earth Covenant. The
turquoise water reminds us of our baptism, and of the springs and
acequias which have long supported the human community here in Placitas.

The Pink
House next door
The land and house just
east of the sanctuary was purchased in 2001. This extra space
allowed us to use the old parking area to build our new wing. Part
of this acquired land was turned into parking and the house is used for
long term and garden tool storage.
